Tempo and Timing the fun way: Rhythm Action Games

O2jam, DJMax, AuditionSEA, Beatmania IIDX, Rock Fever, Guitar Hero

If you've heard or played one of these games, chances are you'll fully understand what I'm talking about in this post.

There's a niche market in the gaming industry with hardcore fans around, IMHO it is also a method to help guitarists, drummers and keyboardists to keep on sync with the music.

Rhythm action games requires the player to hit a button adjacent to the beat and sound within a song continuously. Accuracy based on each individual note is judged loosely or tightly depending on the game. Beatmania taking the hat for the tightest accuracy and reminds a musician just how in sync he is with the sounds being played.

Personally, I feel that rhythm games have it's benefits to musicians in a way that can't be seen clearly. It wouldn't hurt to try downloading an O2jam emulator and try acquiring 99% "COOL" in a high difficulty song. These results can tell how well you will actually play to songs in a recording session which require your playing to be "Clean".
